Keepin’ Cool

The heat is intensifying, the beaches are crowding and you can’t scroll through five posts on your Instagram feed without reading the phrase “beach bod”–summer is officially here and with it the desperate attempt to stay–and look–cool. Before you reach for the no-brainer summer options of denim shorts, tank tops and tired sandals, remember that just because the sun is beating down doesn’t mean you have to look a hot mess. Here are five summer trends so effortless and versatile that they’ll have you looking put together even under the sweatiest of conditions.

Blue Stripes

Ever since the first woman in Vogue rocked pants in 1939, menswear as womenswear has always been thrilling–the contrast between masculine and feminine offers so many unique combinations. A crisp, vertically-striped blue button-down, for so long a classic pick for the boys, gets revived with off-the-shoulder cuts, flirty ruffles and rolled-up sleeves. Enjoy the air conditioning at work in a loose-fitting striped blouse with quirky details or throw an unbuttoned shirt on over your bathing suit at the beach for a polished cover-up. Bonus: thin blue stripes are great for achieving that subtle Independence Day look.

Embroidered Roses

Year after year we depend on florals to be our go-to for a spring and summer look. This year, basic florals decided to be a little bit more extra. The focus is on the oh-so-elegant rose, a classic favorite and a symbol of romance and elegance. There’s nothing too casual that won’t get a makeover with an eye-catching rose, whether it’s distressed boyfriend denim, light bombers or plain white tees. Skip the mall- grab a handful of flora and fauna in the form of patches and iron them on yourself for a custom look. Just remember to keep it simple-such a bold motif only needs a little to do the trick.

Lace Camisoles

Summer 2017 is all about slipping into something a little more comfortable. Why relegate dainty lace and satin to the bedroom when it’s beautiful enough to see the light of day? Easy, breezy and refreshingly cool on the skin, a lace camisole is perfect for those sweltering days, and so much more sophisticated than a basic ribbed tank top. Keep pajama vibes at bay by pairing lacy camisoles with rough, contrasting pieces, such as ripped “boyfriend” style denim and carelessly cool cardigans at night.

A-Line Skirts

A-line skirts make looking flirty and feminine super easy. The classic, flattering shape and options galore make it as easy a throw-on piece as your comfiest pair of jeans–but make more of a statement. Whether they’re denim or corduroy, zip-up or buttoned, A-line skirts are casual and playful while still retaining an easy, polished look and letting your legs soak up some Vitamin D. These structured skirts are the perfect piece to pair with quirky tees or chiffon blouses for an endless variety of looks.

Luxe Shoes

Nothing brings an outfit together or elevates it to another level better than a statement-making pair of shoes. When the summer heat leaves your toes feeling a little bit sweaty in closed shoes, it’s instinctive to grab a ragged pair of flip flops and call it a day. Instead, try adding a bit of heel or glimmer to your look with a couple of the season’s better options: a sleek clog or funky metallic shoe. There’s no stopping you when your comfy shoe gets classy.
